Sharon Jennings was inspired to write this story based on the childhood experiences of her friend Charlotte Teeple, Executive Director of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. Sharon is the author of many children’s books, including Home Free, which was a finalist for the 2009 Governor General’s Awards and is a finalist for the 2009 ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Awards. She lives in Toronto with her family.

Readers never learn Charlotte's country of origin, where Christmas evidently is not widely celebrated (the "true" alluded to in the subtitle is never fully explicated), nor is there any deep sense of the specialness of Hanukkah or Jewish tradition.
