Synopsis

Oprah and Eckhart Tolle's 10-week series "A New Earth" premieres Sunday, March 23 at 12 p.m. ET/PT on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network

The bestselling book by one of the 21st century’s most innovative and exciting spiritual thinkers

With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived "in the now." In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

A New Earth was an Oprah Book Club pick and reads as a traditional narrative, offering anecdotes and philosophies in a way that is accessible to all. Illuminating, enlightening, and uplifting, A New Earth is a profoundly spiritual manifesto for a better way of life—and for building a better world.

World-renowned spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle conveys simple wisdom that transcends any particular religion, doctrine, or guru. His #1 NYT bestselling book is a modern classic in the field of personal growth and spirituality; Oprah Winfrey credits The Power of Now with helping her to "get through September 11, 2001" and she featured it on her December 2002 "Oprah's Favorite Things" show. A native of Germany, Eckhart Tolle attended the University of London, and upon graduation went on to become a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. At 29, a profound spiritual awakening virtually dissolved his personal identity and sparked a radical change in the course of his life. It marked the beginning of an intense inward journey and he devoted the next decade to understanding, deepening, and integrating that transformation. For the past ten years, he has acted as a counselor and spiritual guide, facilitating sold-out groups in Europe and North America. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A New Earth may prove to be a challenging read for some, as the content is deep and often difficult to navigate.

Though sounding very open, humble, and inclusive, Tolle's teachings implicitly reject this biblical truth. He declares that "all religions are equally true and equally false."...dismiss religious teaching that claims to be the only way and the only truth, the unstated, but logically inescapable corollary is that theirs is the only way!

Tolle ends with an inspiring salute to the spiritual practice of enthusiasm, which is not dependent on winning or losing, confrontation or taking something or someone.

That might not be what Oprah, Tolle or others around the world want to hear on their webinar, but he is everything we all need to obtain peace with God and peace with one another.

The book is intellectual as well as spiritual, as Tolle himself, began as an academic.

I found his latest book even more filled with great teaching and also, in some parts, quite a bit more difficult to accept than "The Power of Now".
