Really, my heart insists that A Suitable Boy deservedly belongs to that coveted shelf of books which stocks the kind of selected novels that are said to define the literary milestones of modern Indian literature in English.

Synopsis

Vikram Seth's novel is, at its core, a love story: Lata and her mother, Mrs. Rupa Mehra, are both trying to find — through love or through exacting maternal appraisal — a suitable boy for Lata to marry. Set in the early 1950s, in an India newly independent and struggling through a time of crisis, A Suitable Boy takes us into the richly imagined world of four large extended families and spins a compulsively readable tale of their lives and loves. A sweeping panoramic portrait of a complex, multiethnic society in flux, A Suitable Boy remains the story of ordinary people caught up in a web of love and ambition, humor and sadness, prejudice and reconciliation, the most delicate social etiquette and the most appalling violence.

Anyone wanting to read how a marriageable daughter can X-ray a whole society ought to let this cream-puff-wrapped-in-a-cinder-block pass and return to Tanizaki's classic Japanese masterpiece, The Makioka Sisters.

This book is a gift from Vikram Seth, and your post-reading musings on it are the paper and ribbons it's wrapped in.

Seth's seemingly egoless style allows India's confusion, and its tendency to coherence, to be seen with more light than refraction.

When I tried to read A Suitable Boy before, I was frustrated at the absence of a glossary. I still find it a disadvantage, though inevitably you acquire a working understanding of what things are.

A Suitable Boy so far: it seems tepid or distanced.

What’s really unusual is the way all romantic love we see is purely disruptive and cut across the grain of people’s lives. This is so different from Western storytelling conventions! I’m sure I’d get tired of it, but I found it very refreshing...In conclusion: not only a big book, but also a great one.
