Synopsis

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Includes Lee Child’s short story “Not a Drill” and an excerpt from Make Me!

“The indomitable Reacher burns up the pages.”—USA Today

Four people in a car, hoping to make Chicago by morning. One man driving, another telling stories that don’t add up. A woman in the back, silent and worried. And a hitchhiker with a broken nose. An hour behind them, the FBI descends on an old pumping station where a man was stabbed to death—the knife work professional, the killers nowhere to be seen.

All Jack Reacher wanted was a ride to Virginia. All he did was stick out his thumb. But he soon discovers he has hitched more than a ride. He has tied himself to a massive conspiracy, in which nothing is what it seems, and nobody is telling the truth.

“Furious action . . . [Lee] Child keeps the pacing swift and the surprises rolling. . . . [A] feverishly thrilling series.”—The Miami Herald

“Smart, breathless . . . [with] one of the best female characters in the whole Reacher series.”—The New York Times

“Subtle and nuanced [with] seductive writing and irresistible plot twists.”—Newsweek

You’ll never drive along a lonesome stretch of six-lane late at night, or past one of its no-name exits, without thinking of A WANTED MAN, Reacher, or what might be waiting at the top of the off-ramp.

Our mothers were surely right to warn us against hitchhiking, both because the wrong guys might pick us up and, especially, because we’re not Jack Reacher, much as we’d like to be.

As usual the plotting is immaculate, times and locations precisely mapped...And Jack always wins. He has righteous rage on his side. He is laconic and chivalrous with a devastatingly dry wit. I love him.

Depending on your fondness for Reacher, A Wanted Man could be rated either a so-so read or a shaggy-dog tale. Child can do better and surely will.

Child is a master at evoking low-key, believable suspense and terror, and, in the same passage, evoking a rather humorous joy as Reacher manages to suss just what is going on.

...Just when the plot starts veering into obvious territory, Child begins the twists...and suddenly the expected becomes the unexpected. If there were such a thing as a writer-magician, Lee Child would be the face above the cloak.

The plot is racy and keeps the reader flowing along with pieces of the story dropping in at the right point to stop it going off on a tangent.

Sometimes an author needs to know when to just stop adding detail, and stick with a simple well-written plot...all in all a disappointing story – maybe next time we’ll get back to Reacher and what he does best.
