After her mother dies, eleven-year old Adaline is sent to live in St. Louis while her father, the famous scout Kit Carson, explores the West. Because of her mixed heritage, Adaline is shunned by her relatives, but she suffers in silence until her father's return. When Adaline realizes she may have been abandoned she sets out on a journey to find her mother's people with a stray dog. A journey that will either save her life- or end it.
