Smith has walked some 6,000 miles of trail while carrying his camping equipment, cameras, tripod, and film. Berger has hiked more than 17,000 miles on six continents. Sh is one of 30 people who have thru-hiked the Appalacian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Pacific Coast Trail. She is currently a columnist for Scouting magazine. Smith is professor of history and political science at Iona College.
