Ethan’s wry narrative voice will resonate with readers of John Green as well as the hordes of supernatural-romance fans looking for the next book to sink their teeth into.

Synopsis

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. WhenLena moves into the town's oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

...more questions are raised than answered, and the protracted climax is a long time coming. But readers who like angst-filled teenage romance will be swept up by the haunting and detailed atmosphere, the conventions and strictures of Southern life, and a compelling and dimensional mythology.

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES is an impressive work that goes against the grain of so many formulaic teenage dramas: the romance of Lena and Ethan is both enjoyable and respectable.

An excellent message is conveyed, which would make for rich discussion material, in the form of a quote that is repeated several times in the story: “The right thing and the easy thing are never the same.”

A magical mix of all that is good about YA fiction, Beautiful Creatures is reminiscent of the likes of Carrie, Harry Potter and many more and, though comparisons will clearly be made to its more successful contemporaries, the book manages to be a compelling story all of its own.
