As before, Stohl and Garcia's writing style is absolutely gorgeous and definitely makes this book one to savour and to reread - I was also particularly impressed by the character development here, as Ridley became a much more interesting character...

Synopsis

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

Besides its weaker and more hurried plot, this installment lacks its predecessor's sense of place. Nevertheless, readers eager to...learn more about the Caster world and the Ravenwood family legacy will find satisfaction here.

In a book where you are supposed to be rooting for the hero and heroine to live happily ever after, it’s a really bad sign when all I want them to do is break up.

BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS, the second book of a planned four-volume series, is a southern gothic fantasy unlike anything you've ever read. It focuses on magic and casters (without wands) and is set in Gatlin, South Carolina...

Beautiful Darkness is a more emotional in depth book about Ethan, Lena and the characters of Gatlin County. It will answer the questions you were left with at the end of Beautiful Creatures... Well written and a fantastic read.

As I said to start with the first part of the book is very slow and I found myself questioning an awful lot of what was actually going on because it all seemed a bit weird to me.
