Synopsis

Juniper, living deep in the forest with her parents, is stunned to discover that the beautiful girl living isolated in a nearby tower is her sister. When the two girls meet, what begins as a fascination and a friendship ultimately develops into something truly sinister.

A story of jealousy, passion and power, Beauty's Sister is a dark and gripping reimagining of one of our oldest tales, Rapunzel, from acclaimed novelist James Bradley.

'Offered what I have longed for from other recent pop culture forays into fairytale extension. Utilising fable tropes such as sibling rivalry, childhood misadventure and sorcery, Beauty's Sister took me into its world.' Killings, the Kill Your Darlings blog

A Rat-King is created when a rat nest (a horrible concept all on its own) becomes so crowded that the tails of the rats become physically entangled, and slowly but surely, the separate rats begin to fuse into a single organism.

While the others are all good, MacDonald’s book is hands-down the best book of pop music criticism I’ve ever read, although it’s given a run for its money by one of the other standout books I read this year, Bob Stanley (late of pop group, Saint Etienne)’s endlessly absorbing, occasionally proble...

It’s a problem that’s accentuated by the increasingly abbreviated length of reviews (though to be fair to my editors at The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald the slide in review length has been halted and to some extent reversed over the last year or two) and by the fact that the brutal tr...

there is so much I could direct you to, but to limit citations to a handful – my favourite writing about the ocean (and indeed, possibly my all time favourite book fullstop) is James Hamilton-Paterson’s ‘Seven Tenths – The Sea and its Thresholds’ (London: Hutchinson, 1992).

For in the loss of self that surfing demands, the submission of the conscious mind to the rhythms of the ocean, I find a sort of peace, a capacity to move and think freely, and ultimately, to attain the sort of equilibrium I need to write.

The second was Lev Grossman’s brilliant sequel to The Magicians, The Magician King, a book that exceeds the promise of its predecessor in every way and contains one of the most wickedly intelligent and magnificently entertaining 100 pages you’ll read this year (you can read my review here).

Because many viewers here in Australia are only beginning to watch Seasons 3 and 4 I’m going to avoid any specifics about either season (there’s one vague, non-specific spoiler ahead for people who haven’t seen Season 3 yet), but I wanted to make a couple of observations about the show.

And I don’t think it’s any secret that word limits sometimes make it difficult for reviewers to engage with books in a serious way (though I’d argue a hell of a lot of craft that goes into writing good newspaper reviews, and a large part of that craft, as with any journalism, involves learning to...
