Synopsis

EASY BAKE COVEN

Katie Lightfoot's tired of loafing around as the assistant manager of an Ohio bakery. So when her aunt Lucy and uncle Ben open a bakery in Savannah's quaint downtown district and ask Katie to join them, she enthusiastically agrees.

While working at the Honeybee Bakery—named after Lucy's cat—Katie notices that her aunt is adding mysterious herbs to her recipes. Turns out these herbal enhancements aren't just tasty—Aunt Lucy is a witch and her recipes are actually spells!

When a curmudgeonly customer is murdered outside the Honeybee Bakery, Uncle Ben becomes the prime suspect. With the help of handsome journalist Steve Dawes, charming firefighter Declan McCarthy, and a few spells, Katie and Aunt Lucy stir up some toil and trouble to clear Ben's name and find the real killer..

Once Upon a Romance

Mysterious, the tease of a romantic relationship in the future, the bond of family and friends, delectable treats, and more than a hint of paranormal… My thoughts are that Ms. Cates has most assuredly found the right ingredients to capture the reader’s attention. She’s given us the beginning of a series that is a finely sifted blend of drama, suspense, romance, and otherworldly elements, while all at once being intriguing, touching, and light.

Katie is a very likeable character and very easy going. I imagine it isn't easy to suddenly discover that your parents have been lying to you, but despite the sense of betrayal I think she deals with it admirably. Although it's hard to believe that magic is real and she herself has witchcraft, it rings true and makes sense to her too.

The pace is quick, the story is whimsical and fun, and Cates does a great job of introducing you to her own unique brand of magic. Her prose has a nice flow to it; Cates’ descriptions – particularly of people and of food – are so lush and vivid that the people practically leap off the page and you can almost taste the cheddar-sage scones and ginger-molasses muffins

This start to a new series had everything it needed to begin its maiden voyage. Nice nosey young woman, a family who has been hiding her witch heritage from her, lots of yummy treats and guys, a cute little doggie and of course a murder that she has to get involved with.

I thought Katie made an excellent sleuth. Very strong and smart. The mystery was very well done and I think I had it figured out about halfway through the book, but then decided I was wrong before it was revealed in the end.

As far as the murder side of the story, the plot flows pretty well. It isn't easily guessable as to who the murderer is and I liked that part of it. I do believe that future books in the series could involve a triangle of eligible men for Katie with the introduction of a certain police lieutenant but that remains to be seen. Overall, a good enjoyable read for a cozy mystery.
