Joanne Oppenheim has written over two dozen picture books, including The Christmas Witch. With other members of her family she has created a company that publishes books on the most succesful toys for children, calld the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. Oppenheim, a child-development expert, is one of today's most trusted authorities on child development and education. She is the author of more than forty books for and about children including Kids & Play, Buy Me, Buy Me, and the eight annual editions of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. Oppenheim won the National Picture Book of the Year award in Canada for Have You Seen Birds?. Barbara Brenner was born on June 26, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York. Brenner attended Seton Hall College and Rutgers University from 1942-46, whilst also working as a copy editor at Prudential Insurance Co. from 1942 - 46. Her freelance work as an artistżs agent prepared her for a literary life, as after the birth of her two children she began work on her first book Somebodyżs Slippers, Somebodyżs Shoes, published in 1957. She followed this book with an educational picture book entitled Barto Takes the Subway, designed to improve reading comprehension and sight vocabulary. Her artistic development continued when she began to collaborate with her husband, illustrator Fred Brenner, on The Flying Patchwork Quilt. Her next book, On the Frontier with Mr. Audubon, was selected by School Library Journal as The Best of the Best among childrenżs books published over 26 seasons. One of her best-selling titles was Wagon Wheels (published in 1978), which deals with the trials and tribulations of a close-knit African American family. In 1986, Brenner was honored with the Pennsylvania School Librariansż Associationżs Outstanding Pennsylvania Author Award. Brennerżs most celebrated book is a collection entitled Voices: Poetry and Art from around the World, for which she was chief editor. This book received an ALA Notable Book for Children mention and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults award. Her works include Chibi, Thinking about Ants, and Voices: Poetry and Art From Around the World.
