Complicated romantic triangles keep the excitement high even when the dramatic revelations tend toward the ridiculous. Lush and fun.

Synopsis

Is love worth betraying everything? Plunge into the second adventure in the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and “prepare to be hooked” (Entertainment Weekly).

Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go -- especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

Readers of urban fantasy will devour this deliciously overwrought adventure. Despite hints that Jace’s parentage is in question, the incestuous overtones might be too disturbing for some.

City of Ashes is a great sequel and addition to the The Mortal Instruments series where Cassandra Clare manages to use the previously created world to the fullest. For me there was not a slack moment in the whole storyline, some chapters read away easier than others...But more over, City of Ashes ends with a very cool cliff-hanger...

Overall, I am so glad that I gave this series another chance. It is unlike any other paranormal YA story I’ve read, combining multiple mythologies in a way that makes sense and is tremendously fulfilling.

...there is even a new character with a name right out of the Sooky Stackhouse series, in case anyone forgot to add it to the list of the many other popular works amalgamated by this one. But don’t let my sarcasm hide the fact that yes, I am off now to pick up the next book!

In this book, I felt like I got to know Magnus Bane and Luke MUCH better but the other principal characters remain a mystery in many ways. Clary for example, I don’t feel entirely as connected to her as I felt with Tessa in the ID.

The exploration of loss, adult/parent relationships, sibling relationships, adoptive relationships, friendships, and love (particularly “forbidden” love) are also present and add interesting elements to the major plot.
