Wyoming: the 1880s. Bone hunters comb the land, looking for dinosaur fossils. Ned Chapman works on his father's ranch and dreams of finding a dinosaur skeleton himself. When a violent storm washes out some old bones in the fields, Ned finds himself thrust right into the world of the bone hunters -- men so competitive that they will do anything to bring back the best specimen, even cheat each other!

Elaine Marie Alphin and Don Bolognese bring this fascinating slice of American history to life.

Elaine Marie Alphin is the author of the I Can Read Book a bear for miguel, illustrated by Joan Sandin, as well as several young adult novels, including Counterfeit Son, which won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Young Adult Mystery. Ms. Alphin lives in Madison, Indiana. Don Bolognese was born in New York City to immigrant parents and grew up in an atmosphere of art and Italian culture. A graduate of the Cooper Union School of Art, he determined early on that he would be an illustrator, and after illustrating works by many other authors he decided to write his own books. Among them are several series combining art, history, and adventure, many of which were done in collaboration with his wife, Elaine Raphael, an author and artist. Several years ago he teamed up with Ms. Raphael to design and illustrate "Letters to Horseface, " the story of Mozart's travels through Italy, by F. N. Monjo. Retracing the young composer's footsteps gave him a firsthand look at the birthplace of the Renaissance. That experience provided the inspiration for "The Warhorse."

Wyoming in the 1880s is the setting for this transitional early chapter book, based partially on historic characters who searched the West for dinosaur fossils.
