Synopsis

Don’t Believe Your Lying Eyes is the third outing for intrepid African-American newspaper reporter Darryl Billups, whose previous escapades found him foiling a domestic terrorism plot and unmasking a cunning serial killer. In what just may be his biggest story yet, Darryl is called to cover a multiple homicide at a Baltimore storage facility. Authorities suspect the carnage is somehow linked to the contents of storage unit 25, where a young woman’s mummified body—clad in bloodstained lingerie and opulent platinum-and-diamond jewelry—was recently discovered. The fact that someone was willing to risk the lives of five innocent people following the corpse’s discovery tells Darryl that he’s on to something big—and that’s before the body mysteriously disappears from the medical examiner’s office. Determined to find the truth, he joins forces with a hard-nosed female detective. Together they uncover a decades-old rivalry that reaches the highest levels of Baltimore politics. Novelist Blair S. Walker has been praised by USA Today for his “keen knack for entertaining,” and Don’t Believe Your Lying Eyes doesn’t disappoint!

About Blair S. Walker

See more books from this Author
The son of two Baltimore public school teachers, Blair S. Walker used to entertain himself in elementary school by writing short stories. The practice was frowned upon by instructors who wanted Walker to pay attention in class rather than secretly heed his muse. After serving in the Army as a Korean linguist, Walker attended the University of Maryland and worked as an intern reporter with the Baltimore Sun. Hired by the Orlando Sentinel after college, Walker was fired after six months by an editor who disparagingly noted that Walker’s writing ability was marginal at best! A former financial writer with USA Today, Walker has been an editor with New York Newsday and the Washington Post, and a newsman with the Associated Press. The author of three novels featuring investigative reporter Darryl Billups, Walker holds a University of Maryland J.D. degree and currently lives in South Florida, where he’s pursuing a lifelong dream of learning to fly helicopters.

While not as Baltimospheric as Laura Lippman, Walker's at his best when wandering the mean streets with Billups, or riffing on race, or just talking trash, with the mystery a real but secondary interest.

Whatever the reason, he’s in big trouble, and he’ll have to rely on a strange assortment of allies, including his yuppie sister Camille, hip-hop sports writer John “Mad Dawg” Murdoch, and Detective Holmes—whose relationship with Billups may be more than just professional—to pull his ass out of th...

Despite paper-thin supporting characters (the female detective is of course a beauty who must play down her looks to get ahead in the police force), Darryl himself, nervous about his upcoming marriage to his longtime girlfriend, has a certain amusing charm.
