Johns is an artist and columnist for the Tyler Star in Tyler, Texas. A native of Tyler, he received his B.A. degree from North Texas State University, Denton, Texas. He has worked as an engineering illustrations editor and was a draftsman-artist in Army Field Artillery. He is a member of Fifth Street Presbyterian Church.
