Synopsis

An elite unit of high-altitude drop troops is deployed on a world engulfed in a brutal civil war. Their objective is classified, marked only by coordinates leading them into a deserted city at the heart of the fighting. From the beginning, everything possible goes wrong. A missile strike rocks the carrier mid-launch, and only a fraction of the unit reaches the surface alive. Outmanned, outgunned, and scattered, with a hard deadline to orbital bombardment looming, it is up to Drop Commander Tyco Hale to rally his troops and reach their objective. But what they find, hidden deep in the tunneled passages under the city, will change everything about what he fights for and what he believes in. With the unit in tatters and loyalties divided, the choice he makes in the dark will seal all of their fates - and much more besides. From the beginning, everything possible goes wrong. Having grown up in Germany, Eastern Europe, and the United States, van der Vaart has always had a fascination for different cultures and histories. Combined with a healthy appreciation of science fiction ranging from the Foundation series to Halo to Firefly, it was only natural that he would turn this fascination with cultures and the diverse human experience into a science fiction writing career. His first novel, Hard Drop, had its first incarnation as a screenplay which was shortlisted for the Nicholls Screenwriting Fellowship. The novel follows an elite unit given unclear orders and placed in an impossible situation, and examines the human side of combat as they fight to stay alive and complete their mission. A second Hard Drop novel is currently under development.van der Vaart has also published a short story entitled Old Fool's Errand, about an old, crotchety astronaut selected for a one-way journey to Mars, a topic that is becoming more relevant by the day.In his spare time, Will enjoys reading a cross-section of historical and contemporary historical accounts, while mixing in a healthy mix of dark satire and absurdist commentary. His favorite book is Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita.

Great action, fast-moving plot, and characters that felt real - not heavy on world-building but then I wasn't looking for that. Good times!
