Welcome to P.U.P.I.--Private, Unaffiliated, Paranormal Investigations

A handpicked team trained to solve crimes the regular police can't touch--crimes of magic.

My name's Bonnie Torres. Recent college grad, magic user and severely unemployed. Until I got a call out of nowhere to interview for a job I hadn't applied for. It smelled fishy, but the brutal truth was I needed the work--so off I went.

Two days later I'm a PUPI--me and Nick, Sharon, Nifty and Pietr. Five twentysomethings, thrown into an entirely new career in forensic magic.

The first job we get is a doozy: proving that the deaths of two Talents were murder, not suicide. Worse, there are high-profile people who want us to close up shop and go away. We're sniffing out things they'd rather keep buried.

Looks as if this job is gonna get interesting. The only problem is, we're making it up as we go along....

About Laura Anne Gilman

See more books from this Author
Despite being second-generation editorial and third-generation writer, Laura Anne still didn't know better, going from college (double major, English and history) to a job in the publishing industry in 1989. Specifically, to an editorial assistant position at G. P. Putnam. She quickly moved over to her first true love, genre publishing, and stayed there for 15 years, clawing her way up the corporate ladder until the end of 2003, when she decided that it was time to put more energy into her own writing.Laura Anne had taken the first plunge into murky writing waters in 1994, when she submitted her first story to a professional market. An almost immediate sale to Amazing Stories made her think that this writing gig thing was easy. She didn't make another fiction sale for more than a year, which taught her humility and patience. And the fine art of perseverance.Another sale did eventually follow, and then another, and another, until she was at the point mentioned above where the move to full-time writer seemed logical. Since that first sale, she has written or cowritten four media tie-in novels (Quantum Leap: Double or Nothing; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Visitors; and Deep Water; and Poltergeist: The Legacy: The Shadows Between), while her short fiction has been published in the magazines Realms of Fantasy, Oceans of the Mind, and ChiZine: Treatments of Light and Shade in Words, and the anthologies Did You Say Chicks?, Powers of Detection, and Murder-by-Magic, among many others. She is also the author of a number of nonfiction books for teenagers, and coedited the anthologies OtherWere: Stories of Transformation and Treachery & Treason. Staying Dead is her first original novel, with the second, Curse the Dark, scheduled for July 2005. She is also under contract for a young adult fantasy trilogy for Harper.
