"Haunted" remains stubbornly unscary. It burps up its shock moments with so little ceremony that the Gothic virtue of stealthily sidewinding suspense...is left whistling in the wind. It's like Shelley without the sublimity.

Synopsis

Haunted is a novel made up of twenty-three horrifying, hilarious, and stomach-churning stories. They’re told by people who have answered an ad for a writer’s retreat and unwittingly joined a “Survivor”-like scenario where the host withholds heat, power, and food. As the storytellers grow more desperate, their tales become more extreme, and they ruthlessly plot to make themselves the hero of the reality show that will surely be made from their plight. This is one of the most disturbing and outrageous books you’ll ever read, one that could only come from the mind of Chuck Palahniuk.

All good deeds are punished and nobody escapes unscathed...The constant barrage of wicked sadism soon palls. Stomach-churning horror that takes a bit too much joy in its diabolic machinations.

Chuck Palahniuk's latest is not for the faint-hearted, but Haunted is a triumph.

HAUNTED seems to be about gratuitous violence and grossing out readers. Palahniuk's latest is not the best of his work.

A mountain of fanatically detailed descriptions of self-mutilation, suicide, murder, gruesome sex, even more gruesome masturbation, corpse desecration and decay, child molestation, cannibalism, and pyrrhic self-annihilation...blood, bile, and feces.

When a book kicks off with a teenager getting his intestine sucked out by an intake valve as he's masturbating at the bottom of a swimming pool...well, there's really nowhere to go from there, ya know?

Palahniuk appears to be earnest about all this. I've recommended this book to a few people, but they are all a little bent.

Good

Haunted is the stuff of nightmares. Not the tearful dreams of childhood but a lurid and terrible awakening of the old fears...Twice this week, I've erupted from bed in stark fear...Now this is more like it.

There are many more, and they’re all pretty revolting to me. If you don’t think that sounds like something for you, steer clear and go in peace.

Normally, I’m the first to jump in the air at the news of a Palahniuk adaptation...However, “Haunted” is an animal all itself, and for several reasons, I think that it might not translate to the medium of film. At all.

This was our first Palahniuk novel, and likely our last. Haunted is about being despicable, disposable, and disgusting. To read Haunted is to be at turns nauseous, angry, repulsed, and, finally, fed up. Oh the humanity.

The first story entitled "Guts" as told by Saint Gut-Free will set the tone for the entire book, and is NOT for the faint of heart.
