The background of what seems to be a recent mad cow scare really adds urgency to Connor’s plight. The author does a good job of bringing their situation to a climax without a great deal of melodrama.

Donna Alward debuts with Hired by the Cowboy (3) and makes this familiar premise her own. It has a fresh setting and likable characters, but they're curiously undeveloped, despite their angst.
