The His Dark Materials trilogy does what all great stories should do; entertain and inform without letting one interfere with the other. This is not an easy read, nor is it as light hearted as the movie version has proven to be so far, yet they are probably the most rewarding and intelligent books of their kind that I've ever read.

Pullman, a well-versed reader of children's books as well as a writer of them, insists on a paradox common in children's fiction...Lyra and Will in His Dark Materials - must experience doubts and make choices.

Re-reading the tale, particularly with my mind on the brewing storm, was fascinating and enlightening. It re-established the books in my opinion as true classic literature, not just children's literature, but literature, and heightened my awareness of the hysteria that has enslaved this nation when it comes to religion.

Pullman's books are overflowing with an awe of the beauty and wonder of the universe, as well as an acknowledgement that there is much about the universe that surpasses human ability to comprehend.

The His Dark Materials trilogy is for you if you love fantasy or if you just dig reading books that will make you think. These books are beautifully written and take you on an adventure so epic, it makes Harry Potter seem as interesting as grandma's tea-cozy collection.

Though richly conceived and powerfully written, Pullman's trilogy presents a disturbing — not to say dangerous — vision. Parents, do you know what your children are reading?

Regardless of which side one may fall on this series, it still remains one of the most developed and interesting children's epic fantasy trilogies that goes beyond just telling a good story and leaves the reader thinking on many matters...His Dark Materials...is even better than the Harry Potter series for the subject matter is far more complex...

As an adult you cannot help but become aware of the fact that this is an adults vision of childhood, innocent and curious, which ultimately makes it seem over enthusiastic and verging on irritating.

His Dark Materials meets and surpasses my notions of good fantasy/sci-fi/imaginative fiction: the books engage multiple complex ideas in a new and often unsettling way...The characters grow up and make good, selfless choices, decisions they make independent of absolute moral authority. I very highly recommend these books.
