Synopsis

In a Perfect World is critically acclaimed writer Laura Kasischke’s new novel of marriage, motherhood, and the choices we make when we have no choices left. Kasischke, the author of The Life Before Her Eyes, tells the story of Jiselle, a young flight attendant who’s just settled into a fairy tale life with her new husband and stepchildren. But as a mysterious new illness spreads rapidly throughout the country, she begins to realize that her marriage, her stepchildren, and their perfect world are all in terrible danger . . .

Laura Kasischke is the author of seven collections of poetry and seven novels. Her work has received many honors, including the Pushcart Prize and the Juniper Poetry Prize. Her latest, "Space in Chains," received the 2011 National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry. She lives in Chelsea, Michigan and teaches at the University of Michigan MFA program in Ann Arbor.

But I think that Kasischke’s point is that although her world is much more uncertain in the end, and something bad may happen, what’s important is that Giselle now had a family, even if all she does is worry about them.

And reading about people dying can be troubling- thought it should be mentioned that most of the people who die in this book are not the major characters.

If you are looking for another version of “The Road,” you had better be prepared to deal with excerpts of “Stepmom.” But if you can deal with the somewhat cliché romance at the beginning of the book, it proves to be a suspenseful, gripping story that deals with love, family, and survival.
