Years Have passed since Inquisitor Defay fled the investigation of Nicodemus, deserting his apprentice Gravier. Despite the outlawing of his renegade mentor, Gravier has survived and flourished. Now, however, Interrogator Gravier is confronted with the fanatical Inquisitor Reiker, an agent of the Emperor convinced of Defay's treachery and determined to bring him to justice.

In their search across stars and worlds, their uneasy partnership gradually unravels a larger, terrible plot, before finally they realise the goal of their quest and its final, shocking conclusion.
