One of the things I love about your series is that the books are long enough for intertwining threads, but in this book, I began to feel that the number of storylines was perhaps too much of a good thing...The conclusion I come to is that this book might have been better had it been longer, but that’s not to say that it’s without its strong suits.

Synopsis

A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Renowned for his unquenchable fury and sinister deeds, he is a savage feared by humans and vampires alike. Anger is his only companion and terror his only passion—until he rescues a beautiful female from the evil Lessening Society.

Bella is instantly entranced by the seething power Zsadist possesses. But even as their desire for each other begins to overtake them, Zsadist’s thirst for vengeance against Bella’s tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. Now Bella must help her lover overcome the wounds of his tortured past and find a future with her....

Lover Awakened is quite long but as I was reading it, I kept thinking “oh, how wonderful that there is more to this story” rather than “will I ever get to the end.” There is much that goes on in this story and new characters are introduced but I was never once overwhelmed.

From the beginning, Zsadist has been a mysterious and cold character. His dark past is alluded to, but not explained until now. Bella’s stubbornness and love is something to be admired. You instinctively know that loving someone like Zsadist will never be easy, but you root for her to try and for him to let her.

These books have at least three storylines going on at one time. This particular book had more than that. There were so many things going on at once that the main characters seemed to take a backseat at times...That being said, the part of the book where the bond between Zsadist and his twin was being explored, was moving and heart warming.

J.R. Ward is building a most interesting urban fantasy world here and it's one that I am thoroughly hooked on despite myself. I love small towns, I hate nightclubs, I hate hip-hop, I can't stand tattoos and piercings, but there is something so visceral about this world and these brothers that I love them despite their silly names and bad habits.

If you are looking for action, this book has it. If you are looking for (what I call) urban humor, it also has it. If you are looking for a TRUE LOVE story, this is a MUST in your reading.

Zsadist’s story is heartbreaking, and you might be inclined to pity him for all that he has experienced. However, I can’t help but feel immense respect for him, despite his attempts at scariness and striking terror into the hearts of all he meets...he is an unlikely romantic hero but he is exactly that.

A totally ‘must read’ for all BDB fans and for those who don’t dare to read this series because of the many book in it. But it’s really worth it and I promise that you won’t regret it.
