Deep in the Amazon jungle, members of an elite scientific team are disappearing. Jake gets word his dad is in grave danger. So Jake makes the journey into the remote jungle where he finds the lost crew’s mutilated bodies. He discovers they’ve been slaughtered by a bat-like winged beast that’s now stalking him and the remaining survivors. In a battle to the death, can Jake possibly defeat this bloodthirsty predator?

Paul Zindel was born and raised on Staten Island in New York. After teaching high school science for ten years, he decided to pursue a career as a playwright. His first play, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was produced as a film directed by Paul Newman.

Impeded only by the most minimal plot or character development, Zindel cuts to the gore right away, running up the body count, and sometimes changing point of view so that readers can experience directly the pleasures of having venom vomited into one’s mouth or fangs sinking into eyeballs.
