No Good Duke Goes Unpunished is well-written, funny, tender and heart-breaking; and in Temple and Mara, Ms MacLean has created a compelling central couple who, despite an inauspicious beginning, thoroughly deserve their hard-won HEA – and each other.

Synopsis

A rogue ruined . . .

He is the Killer Duke, accused of murdering Mara Lowe on the eve of her wedding. With no memory of that fateful night, Temple has reigned over the darkest of London’s corners for twelve years, wealthy and powerful, but beyond redemption. Until one night, Mara resurfaces, offering the one thing he’s dreamed of . . . absolution.

A lady returned . . .

Mara planned never to return to the world from which she’d run, but when her brother falls deep into debt at Temple’s exclusive casino, she has no choice but to offer Temple a trade that ends in her returning to society and proving to the world what only she knows...that he is no killer.

A scandal revealed . . .

It’s a fine trade, until Temple realizes that the lady—and her past—are more than they seem. It will take every bit of his strength to resist the pull of this mysterious, maddening woman who seems willing to risk everything for honor . . . and to keep from putting himself on the line for love.

In the third installment of the Rules of Scoundrels series, MacLean once again creates compelling and complex characters and sets them on a path toward love and reconciliation that begins with seemingly impossible odds and ends with exquisite fulfillment. Beguiling and emotionally lush.

The venue of Victorian boxing is fascinating, and adds an enticing sensual twist to some of the love scenes and the use of the gritty underpinning of London is contrasted skillfully with the blindly exuberant silks and celebrations of the ton.

I enjoyed the book, though the heroine did frustrate me at times. No really big surprises, but I Temple made the journey worthwhile. Plus… the Epilogue spill a shocking set-up for Chase’s book. Wow.

No Good Duke Goes reads differently than its predecessors in the Rules of Scoundrels series. It is a dark tale of betrayal and redemption with a highly memorable romance. While Temple is a character who is larger than life, it is Mara who is the star, the more complex character who drives the story.

I found myself getting irritated with both of the characters: Temple because of his revenge, revenge, revenge; and Mara, because she just couldn't tell Temple the whole truth. I was also occasionally bothered by the way the author had them answering their own questions or finishing a sentence in their heads.

Even though it is a historical romance it did not have that historic romance feel to it; mainly because the story is focused on the relationship between Mara and Temple and doesn’t involve the ton, estates, propriety as other historical due. So even if you are not a historical fan this may be one to add to your reading pile.
