"When the body of Pinewood County’s most promising high school senior, Sandy Carlton, is found on the bank of Peace River with a bullet in the back of her head, Sheriff Charlie Morris cannot conceive of anyone having motive to kill the popular student.
But as his investigation leads into a sleazy underworld of drugs, perversion, and murder, he is soon convinced any number of people could have wanted her dead.
There’s Kara, Sandy’s friend who suffers from an undiagnosed mental illness; Diana, another friend who is dating Jim Pratt, a schoolteacher transplanted from California; Jim Ed Pace, Sandy’s ex boyfriend; social outcast Roy “Elvis” Jenkins; and the list goes on.
To further complicate the case, a hit man known to authorities as Zebra is spotted in Uncle Buck’s Blue Duck Café on the outskirts of town.
As Charlie digs for the truth, even he is shocked at secrets that are exposed.
