All my life I knew I’d end up killing. Excerpts from journals of a psychopath, mutilated Barbie dolls, taunting notes planted at body dumps, and symbolically gruesome displays of decapitated women, are all pieces of a twisted serial killer’s masterpiece that Dr. Sara Chioti is asked to analyze as part of her psychological profile. Dr. Chioti is a forensic psychologist consulting with the FBI and NYPD to track a prolific killer in Manhattan. As she delves into his psychopathic mind, her own sanity begins to slip. She is tormented by recurrent nightmares about the murder of her lover, Anna Belle, a renowned country singer, and reeling in anxiety and grief. When Dr. Chioti becomes the victim of a particularly tenacious stalker, she fears that she has become the next target of the serial killer the media branded “The Executioner” and doubts whether she can sufficiently control her panic to solve the case. The serial killer personalizes his game by kidnapping, torturing, and slaying professional women similar in key characteristics to Dr. Chioti and then displaying the decapitated bodies in a disturbingly grisly fashion. He repeatedly goads police by leaving bizarre clues at the crime scenes and writing mocking letters to the detectives. As events unfold, Dr. Chioti struggles to maintain her professional composure when she realizes the profiler has now become the profiled. Dr. Chioti and her partner, FBI Special Agent Scott Steele, frantically attempt to decipher the cryptic messages the ruthless killer inserts in his crime scene displays and interpret his bizarre taunts before he strikes again.
