A love story set in the waning days before World War II, when a monied dilettante returns from Europe to his rural boyhood home and finds that the people are more excited about an imminent flood control dam project than about his misspent decades as a sodden globe-trotter. The reason for his sudden return is a mystery giving rise to rumors of scandal, though the true motive may be to rekindle the one relationship whose failure drove him from the town in the first place.
