Mathis is a graduate of Morgan State College in Baltimore. She received her Master of Library Science degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. For many years Mathis was a special education teacher in junior high schools in Washington. GEORGE FORD is an award-winning artist who has illustrated dozens of children's books, including several by noted authors such as Nikki Grimes, Eloise Greenfield, Nikki Giovanni, and Robert Coles. In 1974, he was the recipient of the first Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. Ford and his wife live in Brooklyn, New York.
