My mother-in-law first recommended this book to me and I'm so glad she did. It got me back into Christian fiction. If you've read other works of Christian fiction and found them to be lacking or cheesy (think Karen Kingsbury), I urge you to give Francine Rivers...a try.

Synopsis

A Story of Love That Won't Let Go - No Matter What!

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea, a man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything. Michael obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation, until despite her resistance, her frozen heart begins to thaw.

But with her unexpected softening comes overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she no longer can deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael does…the One who will never let her go.

A powerful retelling of the story of Gomer and Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

There were times when I sat smiling as I read this and times when I had tears in my eyes. It is a beautiful and satisfying story. It was not a quick read but every page was worth reading.

It only took me two days to read this book in its entirety, so I think it evident that it was enjoyable, even for one (like me) who dislikes Christian fiction in general, and Christian romances most especially.

Wowzers. This is such an amazing book! I knew that the story was inspired by the book of Hosea, so I knew a little about how things would play out. And I suspected a happy ending eventually. But it was still so wonderful...

This story is based off the true story of the prophet, Hosea, found in the Bible, and the prostitute named Gomer that he married at God’s direction. A fantastic tale that I couldn’t put down from the very first page to the last. Definitely check it out!

I get frustrated with change not happening. It got to me a lot in this book, though when I finally got to the end, I understand why Rivers wrote Angel the way she did. It ended up working and was more powerful this way.
