Alastair Reynolds was born in Wales in 1966, and he has a Ph.D. in astronomy. From 1991 to 2007, he lived in the Netherlands, where he was employed by the European Space Agency as an astrophysicist. He is now a full-time writer and he lives in Great Britain.

Finally, the author used a technique throughout the novel where he interlaced future scenes with the main thread of the novel, which detracted from the overall suspense and intrigue.
