Synopsis

The Bight of Biafra - an area comprising parts of what is today Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome, Principe and Gabon - has a sordid and fascinating history, mainly due to its intense connection with slavery and the transatlantic slave trade of the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Repercussions of the Atlantic Slave Trade examines the historical context of slavery and the slave trade in this key region. Based on the conference held in Nigeria in 2000, it includes contributions from a wide range of internationally acclaimed scholars.
