She was still lost in the world of her imagination as she ambled between the low bushes, not really seeing what was around her. A polite cough from the other side of the whitewashed wall brought her immediately back into reality.
She glanced up, and froze.
The nut-brown man from yesterday was standing behind the wall, and leaning his wide forearms on the top. He grinned at her. From here, Leena couldn't see if he really was a centaur, or a prat in fancy dress, or whether she'd just imagined it.
"I'm sorry about yesterday," he said in a low, meltingly rich voice. "I fear I startled you."
"Ah – you did," she said haltingly. She swallowed, trying to work out what to say. You startled me because I thought you had a horse's ass was probably not the best opening remark.
"How long are you renting the villa for?"
"Oh, another five months. I'm… writing a book."
"Oh, how interesting! Fiction?"
"Ah. Uh, yeah, sort of."
"Forgive me. I mustn't pry. I suppose you're out here to get some solitude; the last thing you need is a buffoon such as myself intruding on your thoughts."
"No, no, not at all. It's fine. I'm sure you're not a buffoon."
"Well, you're kind to say so. I shall be off. But let me just introduce myself. My name is Jake, and I live about a mile up the track from where you saw me yesterday. A little cabin. Can't miss it. If you ever need anything, or fancy sharing a bottle of wine one night, do pop up. I'm usually there."
"Ah, right, thank you. Yes. I'm Leena."
She'd fallen into having a normal conversation and had totally forgotten her suspicions as she walked forwards to shake his proffered hand. His palm was dry and comfortingly large. She met his eyes and smiled. Then her gaze travelled past him, and she opened her mouth but only a small squeak emerged.
She stared at the horse's rump that emerged behind him. At the tail that swished casually against his hind legs. His hind legs for crissake's!
"Please," he said, very gently. "Do not be alarmed."
She wrenched her stare away from the hairy horse-part of him, and met his eyes. "What…?"
