Winfield is real enough as a protagonist to root for. More complexity in his world and his character might have made the book more memorable, but it does fit neatly in the “possible enough to be frightening” scheme of science fiction.

Synopsis

2013 Indie Reader Award Winner for Best Science Fiction

In a dismal future driven by corporations, where the population is sterile due to germ warfare, Moyer and Robyn Winfield struggle to purchase a baby. When his wife learns their friends negotiated the price of their newborn, she sends Moyer to Hogan-Perko, a corporation with a monopoly on human cloning, to negotiate for their child, and Moyer finds himself face to face with Viktor Perko - The Father of Mankind. The cost for their baby, all of their savings and the promise of a favor. And when the favor is called in, Moyer must decide if he's willing to kill for his child?
