ROUSTABOUT Some children dream of joining the circus. Mat dreams of escaping. Abandoned by her mother, molested by her stepfather, she sees through the glitter and fantasy of the bigtop to the grimy reality of the backlot. There Mat and the roustabout crew while away the deadening hours between rigging the tent and driving trucks with drugs, booze, and sex. Mat creates a new family out of backlot oldtimers: Al, once a female-impersonating clown, now the cook, her hard-drinking, softhearted friend and confidant; Tante, the maternal costume mistress, whose disfiguring scars run deeper than her skin; Tom, the canvas boss, who treats her like a daughter but shows her more than the ropes; and her lover Jayson, the ringcrew chief twenty years her senior, whose womanizing tears at Mat's dreams for a better life in the real world outside the circus's yellow security fence.
