What begins as a cloying embarrassment for Miranda ends as a kind of parasitical invasion, a feeling so visceral she wonders if she might not be going mad, especially when the rest of her family, blind and pathetically grateful, take to Brendan like dowdy brown sparrows to a monstrous cuckoo.
