"This collection contains 14 fantasy and science fiction pieces ranging from the surreal to satire to just plain silly. All of the stories are unique. Perper died in 2014, but Cornog compiled this collection from his copious notes. Readers will find themselves hoping she uncovers more of her husband’s work for a companion volume."

Synopsis

Ghosts, aliens, vampires, zombies, God and the Devil, robots, detectives, the Arabian Nights, and the afterlife: Thirteen mostly lighthearted tales subvert expectations to introduce unusual characters faced with the unexpected. We discover that devastating power can inhere in sex organs, that the end of the world might get a bit crowded, that blood is thicker than interstellar space, and that some ghosts have heroic histories. And several acerbic dialogues unpack a classic Jewish joke. Under the quirky fun, however, lurk transgressive messages of peace, justice, and freedom. All of us think about sex, many of us think about death (willingly or not), and some of us have thought about the end of the world. But probably not like this. Infused with fantasy and touches of science fiction, these surprising takes on a trio of universal themes will awaken the imagination to new impossibilities.

About Timothy Perper

See more books from this Author
Timothy Perper and Martha Cornog enjoyed nearly thirty-five years of marriage by collaborating on books about sexuality and about graphic novels. They also published fiction in Analog and Oziana. Tim (PhD, CUNY) was teaching biology at Rutgers New Brunswick when he obtained a grant from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation to study pickups in singles bars. In his book Sex Signals: The Biology of Love (1985), he described a body language sequence typical of courtship: approach-talk-turn-touch-synchronization. He told L.A. Life in 1995, "It is behavior, vivacity that attracts people, not looks, beauty, not elegance of dress." Later, he became fascinated by Japanese manga and anime, and coedited with Martha the collections Mangatopia (2011) and Graphic Novels Beyond the Basics (2009). Tim passed away in 2014. Martha (MA, Brown University; MS, Drexel University) has a librarian background and published the award-winning Libraries, Erotica, and Pornography (1992) and, also award-winning, The Big Book of Masturbation (2003). She worked with Tim on many of his creative projects and currently writes about graphic novels for Library Journal.
