It's a girl's story who is pulled out of one world and put into another, one all sparkles and another quite the opposite, both of which she can't seem to fit into. It's the type of story that I've always been a sucker for, but has much MUCH more.

Synopsis

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart. This title has Common Core connections.

With its uncannily beautiful robed magicians, vast wild landscapes and fabled creatures, Ravka evokes the Russia of fairy tales.

The plot is so complex, different and unpredictable that it is virtually impossible to sum it up here. I would certainly give it full marks; everyone should read it!

And, cherry on top of the cake, all the characters are so real – this is a fantasy book with true heart. When I read Shadow and Bone a year ago it completely took both my breath and my heart, along with all of my completely obsessive tendencies.

...what really made this book was the relationship between Mal and Alina. Sure, the plot, world, writing, etc. were incredible, but the bond between Mal and Alina just pushed it head and shoulders above everything else.
