A richly textured novel built around the love-hate relationship between a floundering artist and his wealthy, homosexually-repressed father. The father's ambiguities become the son's obsession, and this obsession leads the son to uncover a father who, after an episode of dashed expectations, rejects his own nature and builds a fortress of denial.
