It’s only been a week since I finished reading the book and already my memories of the details fade. Never a good sign.

Synopsis

"Himiko is brave and bold. I love her!" --Tamora Pierce, New York Times bestselling author

Himiko shouldn't have a care in the world. As the only daughter of the most powerful man in the Matsu clan, she has her every need catered to. But Himiko isn't like other girls. She would much rather follow her brothers' path and become a hunter--something clan tradition and her strict father will never allow. And Himiko has a secret: she can commune with the spirit world. The clan's shaman has seen visions of Himiko's future as clan leader and decides to train her in secret. Suddenly Himiko's path doesn’t look pampered—it looks dangerous.

Readers who love strong girl-centric adventures are eating up Esther Friesner's Princesses of Myth books, finding the mash-up of historical fiction and fantasy adventure irresistible!

It's a somewhat plodding journey through Himiko's early childhood and adolescence, but fans of Helen and Nefertiti will take Himiko into their hearts as well.

This book was a pleasure to read from beginning to end. It was a lovely coming-of-age tale rich in Japanese culture and themes.

I will warn you that the ending is abrupt (which I dearly hate) but it will end up making you want the next one to see what will happen.

I understand wanting to use a legend to write your book, but for the love of everything holy, PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST. Or at least put a forward/afterword about how your subject might never have existed at all.

Right away I noticed that this book does not feel historic nor Japanese...I found Himiko to be a character I wasn't interested in.

A different kind of historical fiction (we need more non-Europe stories) but with lackluster characters and a meandering plot that made it difficult for me to concentrate.

I maybe would have liked this book a lot more if there was actually a plot to follow or it was shorter but for me it was like 500 pages of world building...

Haters gonna hate but weaving a tale on only such few sand grains, well, it will all be up to the imagination and I think Esther Friesner did it well.
