Magic is a wild, weird, quirky thing, and it has a unique feel to it in Dresden’s world (I’ve seen other authors who’ve tried to copy that feel, usually without great success). It’s hard not to love a wizard who ends up running around in sweatpants and cowboy boots due to several calamities...

The mystery plot is mostly an excuse to become immersed in Harry’s world and enjoy how Butcher uses elements from folklore. Storm Front is a nearly perfect distillation of a lot of different things fantasy fans will love.

Additionally, it helps to remember that the novel is told from Harry’s point of view, and he’s an admitted chauvinist. I’d be interested to hear what others thought of this in particular. Storm Front is not perfect, but it’s a good start to one of my favorite fiction series.

Storm Front's premise is pretty slim: a sorcerer-gumshoe in a world just like ours except that magic is real and vampires, trolls, faeries, and other paranormal beings exist side by side with humans, Buffy-style. But Butcher makes it work...

Ive enjoyed this one very much and much more than the last time I read Hamilton, Harrison or Armstrong, though I liked them all. I think this ones going to be my recommendation for Halloween this year.

All in all I found Storm Front tremendously entertaining, remarkably well-written, and original in content. It has wizards, vampires, demons, humor aplenty, nonstop turmoil, and puzzling events. Harry is an appealing protagonist

So begins Harry’s adventure. Exploding hearts, missing husbands, gangsters and far more along the way (talking skulls, faeries, demons, vampires to name but a few). It all moves at a fairly rapid pace and, as you would expect, everything ties together quite nicely.

Harry Dresden is a realistically likable character who I have a suspicion will turn out to be quite formidable, and Butcher lays a promising foundation with this first installment.

Once again a fast-paced urban fantasy plot, Grave Peril has more surprising twists and turns than the more linear first two volumes. Especially the fate of one of the main protagonists at the end, which sort of shocked me, for I never saw it coming. I'm glad to discover that it won't always be a case of all's well that ends well. . .

The book's not Pulitzer Prize material in terms of writing, but it's darn entertaining. Dresden and Murphy have great chemistry, so dancing around that aspect will be a constant thing in future books, which I'm actually happy about. The supernatural characters Dresden encounters are entertaining in their own right...

Butcher’s take on vampires is scary and different with Madam Bianca coming across as a frightening vamp – in more than one way! The action is swift and exciting, while the magic system is interesting – with plenty more left to explore.
