Masha and Thomas Page are friends for life. Masha with a grandmother who summons earthquakes and silences storms, and Thomas with a thirst for adventure. When their neighbor is kidnapped by a dark stranger, they follow her into a world where sleep, dreams, winter, the weather, and wishes are realized as characters in an epic adventure.

Along their journey they encounter the King of Sleep, the Queen of Winter, underground palaces, windswept deserts, ancient treasures, airships, ruined cities, creatures of stone that come to life, a woman who controls the weather, a knife that cuts through time, underground creatures obsessed with soup, and the semi-immortal Sun King.

Occasional flashbacks to the ancient past dot the narrative, but their abruptness and lack of clarification sometimes confuse rather than illuminate the story, even though Vineyard’s lyrical style will keep readers consistently engaged.
