Two cats and the girls who own them are mismatched: The narrator's cat, elegant Evangelina prefers the company of Cecilia, the ballet-dancing girl who lives next door. Cecilia's cat, the rough-and-tumble Whiz, would rather be with Evangelina's scruffy owner. The cats know where they belong and so do the girls, but their parents won't let them switch. When Cecilia and Whiz move away, it seems the cats and their owners will be unhappy forever, but Whiz returns, scruffier than ever after a long journey back to her friend. Finally, the girls are allowed to exchange cats in the satisfying ending to this fresh, lively tale of two very different girls and their very different pets.
