Henry Panian was a professional educator. His major post of 34 years was at Orange Coast College as a history professor. Recognition of his scholarship was marked by Phi Beta Kappa membership. His remarkable instruction was acknowledged by the Salgo-Noren Foundation as its outstanding professor in 1981. In 2001, he helped to found Youth Achievers, tutoring program for at-risk students in the local junior high. While tutoring, he observed too many youngsters almost mesmerized by computer games after completing homework.THE CYMERIAN CHAPTER deals with that concern. Panian became active in public affairs. His major activity was election to the Mesa Consolidated Water District Board of Directors (1977-1998). Consequently, the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce named him Man of the Year (1981) followed in 1997 by the Daughters of the American Revolution Award for "Excellence in Community Service". He and his wife, Barbara, have been married 56 years. They have three children and five grandchildren.
