THE HOBBIT - or There and Back Again by J. R. R. Tolkien

It's a book to be taken in small bits, for though it is in the main an adventure in treasure hunting, it is episodic in character -- and is not wholly easy reading at a gulp. It's a book to be sold carefully, to the right parents -- and with a good start, it might become a perennial.

Synopsis

Now a major motion picture

A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS   Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

“A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.” – New York Times Book Review

For me, I liked The Hobbit. However, I didn’t love it as I loved The Lord of the Ring series. Perhaps, it was because I read the book this time, and I felt I needed it read to me as if I were a child.

Tolkien is wonderful at writing that hardest of all things to write well, the journey. It really feels as if he understands time and distance and landscape. Adventures come at just the right moments.

I’m amazed that many of the events in this book slipped so easily from my memory, as this read-through has scored them there indelibly. The forest, the mountains, the lake – it is the first book I have read for some time that captures such a sense…

The Hobbit, on the other hand, will be funnier to its youngest readers, and only years later, at a tenth or a twentieth reading, will they begin to realise what deft scholarship and profound reflection have gone to make everything in it so ripe, so friendly, and in its own way so true.

The writing is beautiful, at times very funny and witty and always brilliant. As an adventure book, especially one geared for a younger reader, you expect that the plot will move quickly and it certainly does. Each chapter has its own momentum with its portion of the journey.

What I found while reading The Hobbit is a lighter and less detailed version of Tolkien's world than that found in Lord of the Rings. The story has its dark moments, don't get me wrong, but for me there is something missing from the overall adventure. I definitely appreciated this book more when I was a younger reader.

While The Hobbit was a disappointing read for sure, I still reveled in being back in Middle Earth and if there's any reason to read this, then it's that. Truly, there is no place that feels quite as home as Middle Earth does...
