Brief Excerpt
Jeanette looked around when she got inside, apparently not noticing. "Nice place," she said looking around, a smile on her face. That smile just made me all the more convinced I needed to do my duty. A good person shouldn't be cursed to be a werewolf. I turned from the door, drawing my silver medallion from my shirt. Jeanette's eyes went wide. "Mike?" she asked. "What's that?"
"I think you know," I said resignedly. "You're a werewolf. I came into town because I heard one was going berserk around here. I'd tracked them down to that bar... it turned out to be you. We can do this the easy way or the hard way, but I need to protect the people who live here."
She stayed put, watching me warily, like a caged animal. "You've got this all wrong, Mike," she said, waving a hand when I started to cut her off. "Well, not all wrong. I wasn't expecting to get caught out like that, but, yeah, the werewolf part is true. But I'm guessing you're a hunter? There's things they don't tell you, Mike. Not every werewolf is lost to the beast like that. There is one running around town. I'm trying to stop him. Find him and stop him."
I wanted to believe it. I really wanted to believe it. She'd never seemed like a bad person before, and she still seemed like she'd meant well when we'd talked today. But wouldn't someone in that kind of position say whatever it took to get out of it? "Jeanette... Miss Martin," I said, still holding out my hunter's talisman before me. "It's a great story, but you don't expect me to believe it, do you?"
Jeanette shook her head, but still kept her eyes right on me. "Not so easily, no," she said. "Part of it's that I'm asking you to have a bit of faith in me. But it's not like we know each other well enough for you to know what I would or wouldn't do. Or how well I can resist the monster inside of me. But I know there are rites they teach you guys. Some that will suppress the wolf for a time, and not just drive it out. The full moon's soon. I'm hoping... that you'll know those well enough, and that you'll listen to me well enough. If you drive the wolf out of me right now, and go, you'll be consigning this city to the mercies of that feral... monster. And you've got no hope of finding them at all without my help. Do whatever you need to do, but if what you really care about is saving people, then don't do anything permanent, and help me try to stop these guys before it's too late."
I let out my breath slowly, breath hissing in my ear like a balloon. It was a leap of faith, to be sure. And my own neck on the line if she was lying to me. "You know what's involved in these kinds of rites, yeah?" I asked. I let my medallion drop, leaving it to hang against my shirt.
Jeanette tossed her head and laughed. "Yeah," she said, giving me an impish smile. "Not really that different from what I was expecting when I agreed to come back with you, really? I hear there's, mm, ropes involved." She slid her tongue over her teeth, murmuring, "I don't mind. Or does saying that ruin my, mm, schoolteacher image? It's fine if it hurts some. I like it... rough."
