I know I made my dislike for Zoe clearly, so why do I continue to read this series? It is like a trashy novella you can’t seem to get enough. Even though I hate the writing and the characters are crap, I do enjoy the plot twist that come my way.

Synopsis

So…you'd think after banishing an immortal being and a fallen High Priestess, saving Stark's life, biting Heath, getting a headache from Erik, and almost dying, Zoey Redbird would catch a break. Sadly, a break is not in the House of Night school forecast for the High Priestess in training and her gang. Juggling three guys is anything but a stress reliever, especially when one of them is a sexy Warrior who is so into protecting Zoey that he can sense her emotions. Speaking of stress, the dark force lurking in the tunnels under the Tulsa Depot is spreading, and Zoey is beginning to believe Stevie Rae could be responsible for a lot more than a group of misfit red fledglings. Aphrodite's visions warn Zoey to stay away from Kalona and his dark allure, but they also show that it is Zoey who has the power to stop the evil immortal. Soon it becomes obvious that Zoey has no choice: if she doesn't go to Kalona he will exact a fiery vengeance on those closest to her. Will Zoey have the courage to chance losing her life, her heart, and her soul? Find out in the next spectacular installment in the House of Night Series, Tempted.

...their philosophizing goes on a bit too long, putting readers in a holding pattern even when Zoey and her gang are on the move. It’s only when they reach the killer cliffhanger that you’ll accuse them of moving too swiftly.

As a whole, the book had the atmosphere of a bunch of characters running around like a bunch of headless chickens, when a bunch of coincidences come together to whisk them off to another country. It’s a lot of dialogue between Zoey and her friends, planning what to do rather than doing it.

I enjoyed reading the book, but afterward am left wishing it was more substantive. My suggestion, if you’re considering this one, pick it up alongside Book 7. It may make for more seamless storytelling.

Anyhoooo…Erik might be one less ingredient in the Zoey sandwich, but that didn’t fix the irritating over-abundant “love-interest” issue. Zoey’s still got a mini-harem.

The ending of Tempted is something of a shock; I didn’t see the ending coming and was a bit blindsided, but I think it was a brave move by the Casts and a rather brilliant one.

Yes, I do like this series. Although it doesn’t have the market share of Twilight, I actually prefer the stronger female characters. And the twist to the traditional vampire mythology works, at least in my view.
