Synopsis

BEKA COOPER IS a rookie with the Provost's Guard, and she's been assigned to the Lower City. The rest of the Guard is busy investigating the fire opal killer, so it's up to Beka to nab the Shadow Snake.Tamora Pierce begins a new Tortall trilogy introducing Beka Cooper, a young woman who lived 200 years before Pierce's popular Alanna character. Pierce employs first-person narration, bringing readers even closer to a character that they will love for her unusual talents and tough personality.

Fortunately, readers don't need to be familiar with the other books to enjoy "Terrier." A couple of things in the book will make more sense to long-term fans, but the story is very accessible.

Beka has some magic flowing through her veins, the ability to hear the murmurs when pigeons gather, which are actually the murmurs of the dead.

Though boys are notorious for rejecting books with female protagonists, if they allow themselves to try this, they'll like it as much as Pierce's female fans will.

Although (...) the resulting novel is quite long, it also ensures that readers will be engaged enough in the fate of Beka, her friends and the citizens of the lower city they will find that the conclusion comes all too soon.
