Cora Howder didn’t know what she was in for when she adopted a second Chihuahua. Nor did she know that her trip to write a book while staying in a Bald Head Island beach house would set off a series of hair-raising, tail wagging events that could put her pooches in harm’s way. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, aren’t we? Let’s begin at the beginning. Cora first adopted Bennett and then Lola. After a bit of jealousy and pretending to ignore Lola on the part of Bennett, the two join forces to become the formidable dog detective team of Chief Inspector Brown (Bennett) and his relatively fearless partner, Sergeant Starfoot (Lola). On Bald Head Island, they quickly become friends with the local population—Moc the Mockingbird and Jugular, aka Jug, the huge mongrel dog—before they stumble across a turtle egg trafficking racket. This is just the kind of case the pair of Chihuahuas are ready to take on. Joining forces with Moc, Jug, and Big Mama, a loggerhead turtle whose nest is in danger, the clever canines concoct a plan to foil the egg snatchers and save the day. However, while the mission is a success, Starfoot and Brown are washed out to sea—and then dognapped! It will be up to their intrepid friends to rescue them or they will never see Cora again. A raucous romp for children of all ages, Rhoda Canter’s hilarious adventure has more twists and turns than a jar full of licorice whips. Highlighting the importance of strong friendships and the need to create and support the feeling of community, she underlines the importance for kids to take a stand for the environment. Showing that even someone small can take on evil forces and prevail, The Adventures of Starfoot and Brown teaches kids that success often requires thinking creatively about what you can do, making a plan, and working together to see it through.
