Very quick and suspenseful, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment is the first in a wildly popular series for teens. Fantastical and completely unrealistic, this is escapist fun with super-powered teens completely on their own, running for their lives.

Synopsis

In James Patterson's blockbuster series, fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it's like to soar above the world. She and all the members of the "flock"--Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel--are just like ordinary kids--only they have wings and can fly. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time...like when Angel, the youngest member of the flock, is kidnapped and taken back to the "School" where she and the others were experimented on by a crew of wack jobs. Her friends brave a journey to blazing hot Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare--this one involving fighting off the half-human, half-wolf "Erasers" in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives. Along the way Max discovers from her old friend and father-figure Jeb--now her betrayed and greatest enemy--that her purpose is save the world--but can she?

The often violent hunt-and-chase plot resembles that of a Saturday morning superhero cartoon. The point of view shifts jerkily before settling into Max's first-person narration...The Patterson name will attract readers; but his fans may be disappointed that this tale never takes flight.

I thought Maximum Ride was a bit poor... The story line just wasn't very good and I didn't think you got that attached to the characters really...I think it was also quite predictable! I won't be desperate to read the second one Maximum Ride: School's Out Forever anytime soon!

Patterson is the latest adult author to try his hand at the YA genre. While his book is a good read, he doesn't trust his audience enough and overstates the obvious...If he tones down his stodgy language...this series about a strong girl who wants to kick butt will be a welcome edition to the genre.

The characterisation is simple and the story is largely told in the first person from Max’s point of view...Max is a likeable character and we are able to sympathise with her and her flock’s plight...They are quick reads and can be polished off in one or two nights.

For teens who just want action and excitement and who don't much care about the niceties -- such as logic, character development, consistent voice, or plot -- this will be plenty of fun...The entire book amounts to little more than a prologue to the series...

Maximum Ride is a wonderful series that both teens and adults will love. The characters of Max and the other children seem like normal, everyday kids, thrown into a harsh environment and problems beyond their control. With plenty of action, adventure, and mystery, this book is even more fun than its adult novel predecessors.

A very fun book. The chapters are short and tightly written and a real thrill to read. There's never a dull moment; the action just keeps coming, hit after hit and jaw-dropping surprise after jaw-dropping surprise...I would recommend this book for ages 13 or maybe 14 and up.

Because this is the beginning book in a series a lot of time is spent setting up the story and introducing us to the characters. There are a lot of unanswered questions...The one thing I didn't like about the book was that Max seemed more like a forty-year-old instead of a fourteen year old.
